Worst company in the hosting world. I know they sold my information to other companies who now call, text, and email all the time. I know this because I was signing a customer up to do their web design so I put it under his name and am getting all these communications with his name attached. I played along once, and then when I finally questioned one of these people about where they got my information, they didn't answer but promptly hung up. I contacted powweb about this and they said because I didn't pay for extra protection (have a box checked) when I was signing up the hosting, they took my info and did whatever they wanted with it. I started to migrate all my clients away from this hosting as well as my own site. They charged me a month early before I had a chance to cancel my hosting. I asked them for a refund, but they refunded me in USD and I am Canadian. This resulted in a currency issue and less money being refunded. The person on chat said I would get everything back, but neglected to comment on currency issues. When I contacted them again, they said it was my fault for not selecting Canadian currency when signing up. I looked back at my emails and not once did they state that it was in either CAD or USD. I basically had to threaten them to return all my money. After that I asked them to delete all my account and all my credit cards of their files. They said they did it, but sure enough, a year later they charged my PayPal account, which I never used with them and had no idea they could just charge me like that out of the blue. This, too, was done earlier than what it was supposed to be charged. Luckily I contacted them the same day and they refunded the entire amount, but it took 10 days for it to go back onto my PayPal. So essentially, if they do this to everyone, they could just have free access to money for days and days before people realize. They are hoping you wait too long to notice so they can tell you "Oh sorry, because you've been using this annual service for 3 weeks into the subscription we can't refund you," which has also happened to be via another account--so I had to pay for something all year that I never used. Also, I noticed that if you leave a site untouched for several months (I have a portfolio site, no need to fix or touch much), your site will suddenly disappear and you will have to go reactivate it. I've had to ask support to fix it and they act like it's no big deal. This company is so sketchy. STAY AWAY!!!
PowWeb has abhorrent customer service. First, our website went static. And after multiple frustrating calls and online chats, I was told they no longer supported the platform our website was built on. (To my knowledge we were never notified of this.) Then our domain name went public. I sent them an email. One week. No response. I called them, and it took them 15 minutes to say it was due to non-payment. (We were on auto-pay.) Their web page promotes friendly tech/customer support and an opportunity to give feedback. However, when you click on the feedback link you are taken to a "Knowledge Base" page which takes you to various other links to "help" you. Talk about a frustrating experience. I don't even have the words to describe the utter disgust and disappointment I have experienced with this company. I would NEVER recommend this company to anyone. Even if it was free.
This has to be THE worst company ever! I have had my website hosted with this company far too long. Countless problems with the files getting lost. Customers going to my website, only to find out there is no website. File directory is a mess as it keeps pointing to a file directory that is not accurate or non existent. FORGET trying to have anyone of their "technical specialist" open a ticket and try to find the bug or problem. They will only further exacerbate the problem and get your blood pressure boiling with their in-competencies. This is a company that is in the wrong business for sure. This would turn into a 10 page essay of all the things that they have done wrong and their in-competencies. So I won't bore you with all the details. Please just trust me when I say, run!
I wish I could give them zero stars. I've had Powweb for 10 years and it was great at first. However, their service has steadily been going downhill and now I'm just done with them. I paid for premium support and it took forever to get them to stop charging me. Since then, there's been pretty much no support. Sure, I can call them or use the live chat, but the chat is a long wait, keeps disconnecting, and there's no longer a ticket system. I have so many issues now, there's no effing way to do it without a ticket system. Even when I'm on really nice campus internet, the speeds to all my Powweb sites are molasses and filled with disconnects. That's making downloading my files for backup and editing nameservers and other settings on my domains so slow I want to cry sometimes. God help you if you do anything in your control panel while logged into an FTP client because one or both will time out.
I have two domains that have been pending verification for months now. No matter how many times I have the verification email re-sent, it either never comes at all or it does come but following through with the verification does nothing. They also reset the custom error pages setting to default non-custom with ads, so any miss-typed directory results in what looks like garbage parked spam site that my browser keeps warning is full of malware. Their domain registration prices are cheap, but then they more than double the price upon renewal. Transferring my domains to a new host is going to be a nightmare. I know, I've tried to do it before. Want to remove domains registered elsewhere? Errors upon errors. Also, apparently Dotster, the domain registration service, is one of Powweb's sister sites and oh boy, do things go wrong weirdly when trying to add a Dotster-registered domain to a Powweb hosting account.
I tried to manually install Concrete5 today because Mojo Marketplace (see below) kept failing the install, even after I updated my server's PHP. As far as I can tell, everything went fine except one tiny little setting in my SQL database. It's an easy fix. Except I can't actually log into it from the MySQL page from the control panel, it throws a 404. Are you kidding me? The database login link throws a 404?
You know what else throws a 404? The site backups and restore page from the control panel. You know, the very critical function every webhost should have? I have lost track of just how many different control panel/OPS functions throw 404s. Their knowledgebase has been throwing 404s for so long, that's why I paid for premium support in the first place. It was easier than moving everything because of just how many sites I have and how I need them to stay up. But it's beyond that now. It's far easier to spend a couple weeks transferring everything or even recreating them by hand than this crap.
And remember when they used to have a neat little MySQL tool to install databases and scripts? And it worked? I miss those days. I even miss SimpleScripts. The Mojo Marketplace they replaced it with is utter garbage. I can't log in to ANY of my installs anymore, even the installs I did through Mojo Marketplace. I just get a 404, but not even a 404 on my own site; I'm redirected to Mojo Marketplace's 404 page. On my own URL! My own URL's login page, which is literally a php file I can SEE in my directory listing in FTP. Navigating directly to the login file itself throws a 404. This happens over and over. I cannot admin my pages anymore because of this. And forget about updating any of that installed software on Mojo Marketplace. It consistently fails on the backup step. Sure, they let you skip that, but then you have to agree to hold them harmless if updating without backing up screws up your site. Except their backup throws a 404, so you can't actually back up at all. And if you proceed with the update, they always fail right at the start for unexplained json errors with no indicator of exactly what specific error it is. And even if it throws that error before the update really starts, your site is corrupted. And if you already have backups, you can't back it up because the restore doesn't work on Mojo OR Powweb!
I'm done with them. Completely and utterly done. Though with the trouble I went to trying to cancel the premium support service AND the trouble my partner went through trying to cancel his own hosting account, I'm probably in for a long road. In the end, the only way my partner got his account really and truly canceled was by changing his billing information to an old credit card that was no longer used. That's because they kept charging him long after he canceled, no matter how many times he called in.
Leaving them as of now. Their tech support is useless. I have constant issues with email and open a support ticket. I get a stupid response like stop using Microsoft Outlook for a while and see if the problem goes away and ticket is closed. Complain and get ticket re-opened and then I get "the people you can't email must have their DNS servers programmed incorrectly, you need to contact them and get it fixed". So 20-30 people I can't contact all over the world have incorrect DNS servers all of a sudden. Nothing is ever their fault.
On Saturday, August 26, our company lost PowWeb services because of "an audit". We've been told EVERY day since then that our service would resume between 24 and 48 hours ... not acceptable for a small business. This Wednesday morning a supervisor told us that we would be up and running within 4 hours ... another untrue statement and failure to manage customer expectations. We still cannot send or receive business emails. We encourage you to find another provider before reaching out to PowWeb. Do not use this unsatisfactory provider !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I passionately hate Powweb these days. They changed their tech support to the Philippines and these clowns are a bunch of know-nothings, nothing-burgers eating idiots. When I call over tech issues they always have me on hold forever. They agree with me on a pricing correction and then do not meet the obligation and then deny the dialogue took place. Powweb should shut down if they are unwilling to run a moderate normal business. This week I will be migrating my hosting; it super sucks but it is a necessary evil!
About 2 years ago I paid for them 900.00 for them to design me a web site. About 6 months ago I googled my domain name and web site that I paid for is no longer there. I have called 2 times and no response to where it is. Only that they opened a ticket on it.
